When to bother

How do you know your panels need cleaning?

Dust, pollen and bird mess sit on the glass. They cut how much power you make. From the ground you can often see these four signs.

A dull film across the glass

Panels look flat and grey, not dark and shiny. You see it even on a bright day.

Bird mess along the top edge

It lands on the highest edge and runs down the panel in streaks.

A yellow-green cast after spring

Pollen builds up thick. Rain on its own will not shift it.

Tide lines where rain runs off

Rain moves the dirt about but does not take it away. It leaves lines behind.

Where I stop

I clean panels I can reach from the ground with the pole. If the pole will not reach yours, I’ll tell you. I won’t take the booking. I don’t go on roofs.

I clean the glass and nothing else. I don’t touch the wiring, the mountings or anything under the panels. Does something up there look loose or damaged? I’ll tell you what I can see. That is a job for your installer, not a window cleaner.

Can you reach panels on my roof?
Domestic panels on a house roof, yes — wherever the water-fed pole reaches them from the ground. That covers most houses around Dover and Whitfield. If yours sit where the pole will not reach, I will tell you that rather than take the booking. I do not go on roofs.
Do you clean ground-mounted arrays?
Yes. Arrays at ground level are cleaned the same way, with the same water.
What do you clean solar panels with?
