How do you know your gutters need clearing?
You hardly ever see the blockage itself. You see what it does. Here are four signs, in the order most people spot them.
Water spilling over the front edge
In heavy rain, water should run to the downpipe. It should not pour off the front of the gutter. If it does, something is holding it back further along.
A green or dark streak down the wall
Water that goes over the edge, not down the pipe, runs onto the render week after week. The stain shows up long before the damp does.
Plants growing out of the gutter
Grass, moss, the odd sycamore seedling. If a plant has roots up there, the gutter has held silt long enough to make soil.
A damp patch inside, upstairs
This is the costly one. By the time water comes through the wall, it has often been going over the edge for a season or two.
Where I stop
I clear gutters. I don’t repair them. If a bracket has dropped, a joint leaks, or a length sags and holds water for good, you’ll need a roofer. I’ll tell you what I can see. If a gutter has come away from the fascia, clearing it would just take your money for nothing.
